Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soil
Rate of growth: slow to average
Hardiness: fully hardy
This is a great plant for creating year-round interest. The handsomely lobed foliage emerges a soft lime green before turning fresh green for summer. In autumn the leaves then turn vibrant shades of orange and red before they are shed. After the last leaf has fallen, the silhouette of the bright green bare stems really stands out - particularly if it is placed in in front of a contrasting backdrop. It's a great choice for smaller gardens or large patio pots.
Please note that some of our pictures show this plant alongside two other acers - 'Bi Ho' with the yellow bark and 'Sango-kaku' with the red bark.
Garden care: Add a top dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser around the base of the plant in late spring. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
